22 Weeks Pregnant...
Baby's Favorite Toy...the Umbilical Cord
You're 22 weeks pregnant
and your baby is about 11 inches long and weighs about 1 pound. The skin still appears wrinkled while fat is still being deposited under the skin. Don't worry your baby will be the plump little rolly polly in no time.
There is a full supplement of neurons in the baby's brain and baby is learning about his/her body and surroundings through touch. Touch is one of the first senses to mature. Your baby is going through rapid brain growth and will continue until your baby is 5 years old.
The lips are more distinct and the eyelids and eyebrows are in place. The pancreas is developed to the point where it is producing hormones. The fingernails now cover the fingertips.
Your baby loves to play with the umbilical cord and may squeeze it. Don't worry though the cord is very thick and is normally 19.5 to 23.5 inches long.
I cut the umbilical cord for my aunt when she had her baby. It was so thick and it felt like cutting rubber. I had to really squeeze hard to cut the cord.
The funciton of a baby's liver is different from the function of an adults liver. The enzymes in an adults liver is responsible for miscellaneous body functions. These enzymes are present in your baby but in lower levels while in your womb.
The liver is responsible for the breakdown and handling of bilirubin. Bilirubin is produced by the breakdown of blood cells. This bilirubin is passed from the baby's blood through the placenta and into your blood. Your liver helps the baby get rid of fetal bilirubin.
Once your baby is born, if he has a high amount of bilirubin, he will show signs of having jaundice (which gives off a yellow tint to the eyes and skin).
