5 Weeks Pregnant...
and counting

  • fetal age = 3 weeks

You are 5 weeks pregnant and your body is definitely working overtime.

Your baby is growing at such a rapid pace that it's unbelievable! Around this time the embryo resembles a little tadpole more than a human. The body begins to curve into a C shape. The embryo measures 0.05 inches in length and weighs less than 1 gram. Now that's an extremely tiny little human!

The baby's brain, heart, bones, muscle and spinal cord are all beginning to develop. The baby's skeleton is also forming. Facial features, such as eyes, ears and nose, also begin to form. The hands are forming as well and basic hand 'plates' are present. The 'plate' that will later become the heart has also developed.

5 week embryo The neural tube closes and the spleen appears during this week. The arm buds and tail are visible too. The amniotic sac, which will provide a safe place for baby and the placenta, which will nourish and provide oxygen to your baby, are also forming.

The very strong heart beat is now beating twice as fast as yours. Blood vessels have formed and the tiny umbilical cord has connected itself to the rapidly developing placenta. The embryo now has a very distinct top, bottom, left, right, front and back to it's body.

Around this time you may start to experience some pregnancy symptoms such as nausea.
